Meet Rebecca
Rebecca Shaw, LCSW
As a therapist, my job is to help you increase awareness and understanding of yourself. If you are new to therapy, it may feel counter-intuitive to come to a stranger for help understanding yourself. In my experience, therapy is a partnership in which you bring the information, I bring a fresh perspective, and together, we make discoveries. This is where enhanced understanding of self takes place, and from here, change can begin.
I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) practicing in New York City. I have years of experience working with adults ages 18+. My style is primarily psychodynamic, meaning we’ll spend time talking about what your life has been like from childhood through to the present. In doing so, we’ll uncover where along the way you developed the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that have become second nature to you - whether they serve you well or not. At times I use approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, mindfulness, among others, incorporating them when it makes sense for each client.
I am particularly interested in and adept at working with those who struggle to develop and maintain healthy interpersonal boundaries; find themselves repeating maladatpive behaviors; experience feelings of “stuckness” and crave direction; are in recovery from substance abuse and/or addictive behaviors; have chronic depression, and more. I pay special attention to the needs of LGBTQ clients in therapy who face these same issues, as well as others.
